What I want to build and take to completion at Nautilus

The Problem

Athletes—elite and amateur—face information overload on endurance training and recovery. Many rely on expensive, commercial wearables or follow questionable, trend-driven advice without understanding the underlying physiological principles that actually drive performance.

Wearables like Garmin and WHOOP are closed ecosystems, and many physically demanding professions (firefighters, military, construction workers) don’t have access to affordable physiology tracking solutions.

The Solution

At Nautilus, I will build an open-source endurance physiology knowledge base starting from first principles and explore low-cost physiological tracking alternatives.

Deliverables by the end of Nautilus:

  1. Public knowledge base → Structured insights from 20+ key research papers, translated into actionable frameworks
  2. Wearable feasibility study → A technical breakdown of how commercial wearables track exertion and recovery
  3. Sensor-based experiment → A prototype testing if physiological tracking can be done outside expensive commercial devices

The ideal case scenario for my life after Nautilus

If everything goes well, I strongly believe that Nautilus will be the foundation for something bigger — specifically, it will lay the groundwork for developing accessible physiological tracking solutions.

A hypothesis that I’m willing to test within Nautilus is that the problem space for innovation increases the closer I get to raw physiological data. If that is true, I would probably embed myself in companies and research labs that deal with wearable technology and human performance research.

Long term, this work could evolve into developing an open-source physiological tracking tool that removes the cost barriers of commercial wearables or advancing ML-driven physiological modelling to optimise performance for high-exertion professionals.

Regardless of where it leads, Nautilus will serve as the proving ground to validate key assumptions, establish a strong research-backed scientific foundation, and determine the most effective way to make physiological tracking more accessible and impactful.
